First built in 1826 and refurbished as a heritage site in 1975, Masjid
Sultan sits grandly on Muscat Street. Its evenings are usually quiet; save
for the occasional curious onlooker, the camera-totting tourists long gone
from its compunds. However, for thirty days in the Islamic holy month
of Ramadan, the mosque and its surroundings transform into a bustling
area of people and food as night falls. Muslims in Singapore celebrate Ramadan
by fasting from dawn to dusk and performing daily prayers for
the duration of the month. On Muscat Street, they carry out these activities
under the watchful eye of the golden-dome of Masjid Sultan.
